THE BOOK BEHIND THE THIRD SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES, AN ORIGINAL SERIES NOW ON HBO.

Here is the third volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

A STORM OF SWORDS

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King’s Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world. . . .

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others--a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . . .

After reading the first three books this one was definitely the most exciting. I couldn't put it down! Not a huge fan of the Dany and Sansa chapters but the rest was full of action, intrigue, and intricate plots. Starting the 4th book immediately!

The best of the series

This book is Martin's finest work. It doesn't go the way most fans would want, but it is true to its world. The book helped me to define perceptions through its first person narratives. The book ends nearly all of the delusions that readers assumed from the first two. Jamie Lannister is the best character of all in the series. Tyrion is a good character as well, but he commonly mistakes intelligence for wisdom. His character assumes too much and asks too little, especially when he talks with Varys.

A roller coaster to be ridden again and again

Just when you thought GRRM couldn't deliver a better read then the HBO series presents along comes a Storm of Swords... Valar morgalis is an understatement that delivers even more treachery than the first two books. To be sure that All Men Must Live! I've ended up awake a 4 am, unable to put this down and by page 900, I bought the rest of the series. I assure you, this series will deliver.

Can't the good guys ever win?

First of all let me say I really really enjoy reading these books. They are very well written and extremely difficult to put down. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is cause the "good" guys NEVER win. Just when you think something good is going to happen something terrible happens instead. Don't get me wrong, I like it when the good guys don't always win but is it to much to ask for a small victory every now and then?

On to A Feast for Crows

There were times where it seemed to lag and I skimmed a paragraph or two but on the whole the series and the book itself are great. As I have said before I LOVE the fact that GRRM doesn't collect a menagerie of characters that start to get stale. Most of these would be lucky to meet maturity date and while it's become a kind of "ok who's next" and "is there gonna b anyone left to continue the series?" I will keep reading. Valar morghulis

A Storm of Swords

It was really an arduous task to complete this book. I am exhausted at the limitless barrage of villains who pop up at every turn of a page and the lack of a significant protagonist. At this point in the series the writer and the characters have become too predictable. Anytime a "non-villains" forms a plan, escapes or is involved in conflict it is guaranteed in the long run they will fail, be captured or lose. I already have the next book, A Feast of Crows. I purchased it before I knew how tiresome A Storm of Swords would be. I'm hoping it will restore my path in this series. If not, it will be my last book from A Song of Ice and Fire. The only reason I gave it a one star is because my iPad would let submit my review without giving a star rating.

Sparklingsundrop

Can't wait for book 5!

Read it a decade ago in paperback but when the show came out I decided I needed a reread and I must say it was just as good as I remembered. Don't read this book but if you do read it I hope you enjoy the story as much as I do.

I'm Hooked

The continuing story of the families Stark, Lannister, Tully and others. If you, like me, have gotten this far in the series then you know that you have to go on to the end. You're too involved in the lives of the characters to stop now so just go on and enjoy?

Augustus99

Amazing

The author paints a lively world which feels alive. The book is fantasy but the author makes you feel like it could be real, like you are peering into some parallel world where magic exists, dragons are born and men do what men always do and fight for gold, naked ambition and glory. *I would recommend reading "Game of Thrones" and "Clash of Kings" before reading this book so you get the most out of it. Otherwise, you might not understand the motivations of some characters or even the epic struggle which has ben raging since the end of "A Game of Thrones". I highly recommend this book. This series has been such a thrill to read. Don't miss this book.

Odds.d

Unrealistic, predictable.

The author tries sooo hard to make sure that he's not "cliche" so he makes certain that the "bad guys" always win, and the "good guys" always die. It's too predictable. Unfortunately, you always know what's going to happen next, and that just made this too tiresome for me.

As I have said before I LOVE the fact that GRRM doesn't collect a menagerie of characters that start to get stale.

The continuing story of the families Stark, Lannister, Tully and others. If you, like me, have gotten this far in the series then you know that you have to go on to the end. You're too involved in the lives of the characters to stop now so just go on and enjoy?

As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . . .

The author tries sooo hard to make sure that he's not "cliche" so he makes certain that the "bad guys" always win, and the "good guys" always die. It's too predictable. Unfortunately, you always know what's going to happen next, and that just made this too tiresome for me.

As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . . .

Great

Best of the series so far in my opinion. I'm very happy I decided to read the as well as watch the series.

You aren't ready.

Bar none the most emotionally taxing and fist pumping roller coaster of modern high fantasy I've read and will likely ever read. It is all it's cracked up to be and more, without spoiling anything, I recommend tissues and a wall for which you may punch a hole in if need be.

Another great book

Glad to read this after seeing all the GOT episodes, as it refreshed and enhanced my memories. Was too wordy when repeatedly including backgrounds of lesser-known characters.

Books are great!

These books are phenomenal, but I really wish you guys could take the time to title the chapters like they are in the book. I don't know what number the chapter I'm on is because on the page it only says the persons name. You guys had it right and then I got the stupid update and it's back to numerical chapters. Please fix this.

The greatest book I have ever read

I cannot tell you how many nights I attempted to read this book to help me fall asleep, only to stay awake to dawn reading this masterpiece. This is hands down the greatest fictional work I have ever read. I cannot praise it enough! if you had read the other books this is a must. If you haven't I truly suggest diving into the series literature, its truly mind bending greatness. George R. R Martin you are a genius and have me completely hooked. I thank you sir for sharing your vision with the world. - Ryan Tyler S

A Storm of Swords

I dread the inevitable end of this saga. I love the multiple story lines and the myriad characters, all ultimately linked in subtle and not so subtle ways...

Best so far

After reading the first three books this one was definitely the most exciting. I couldn't put it down! Not a huge fan of the Dany and Sansa chapters but the rest was full of action, intrigue, and intricate plots. Starting the 4th book immediately!

TheStarkGirl

Death, death and more death.

Not since Game of Thrones has there been such an epic and surprising twist. This is, in my opinion, the best book of the ASOFAI series.

Great book!

Can't wait for Season 3 to start. I hope it's as good as the book.

Macke47

The best of the series

This book is Martin's finest work. It doesn't go the way most fans would want, but it is true to its world. The book helped me to define perceptions through its first person narratives. The book ends nearly all of the delusions that readers assumed from the first two. Jamie Lannister is the best character of all in the series. Tyrion is a good character as well, but he commonly mistakes intelligence for wisdom. His character assumes too much and asks too little, especially when he talks with Varys.

jwd22

Action packed

I lost so much sleep reading this third book. Could not put it down as every chapter that I said would be my last of the night lead to me needing to read the next. Please god do not take another 5 years to write the next one!

This is the best book in the series by far. It will hook you immediately and it won't let you go. So, be prepared to spend hours every day, voraciously consuming page after, and not wanting to stop, not getting full... even when you have turned the last page.

Probably the best book I have ever read. If you hate depressing books where your favorite characters unexpectedly and brutally die though, I wouldn't read it.

Amazing read

My free time is gone!!!

Each time I start a new book in this series I am completely worthless to the rest of the world. Cannot put it down!!! I've decided to stop fighting it, and plough thorough to the next book! Such an amazing collection! This is the first time I have ever read fantasy books and I am in love with this collection! Not just for dorks who live in their mom's basement playing Warcraft.

The continuing story of the families Stark, Lannister, Tully and others. If you, like me, have gotten this far in the series then you know that you have to go on to the end. You're too involved in the lives of the characters to stop now so just go on and enjoy?
